One Tree's staff all believe in the value of the martial arts
and are practitioners themselves. Our instructors have shown
proficiency in the martial arts as well as in the ability
to teach martial arts techniques and concepts. Our instructors
are required to go through a rigorous instructor training
phase including hundreds of hours of supervised teaching and
team teaching. More about our Instructor
Certification Program here.
Master Buchholz, our school's founder, was born in Eau
Claire, Wisconsin. He has studied many martial arts
beginning his training with the Korean arts of Taekwondo
and Hapkido. He has also trained in the Northern Shaolin,
Southern Hung Gar and Wing Chun Kungfu styles as well
as Tai-Chi, Shuri-Ryu, Jui-Jitsu, Kobudo and others.
Buchholz has worked as a law enforcement officer in
Colorado and Wisconsin. He studied police and military
defensive tactics, narcotics interdiction, as well as
SWAT, anti terrorism and hostage negotiations. On the
street he has put these tactics along with his martial
arts techniques to the test and found them to be very
the past Master Buchholz has worked extensively with inner
city youth and juvenile delinquents and their families in
Wisconsin, Indiana and Colorado. He has received several awards
for his work including recognition from the Honorable Judge
Payne of the Marion County (Indianapolis) Juvenile Court System.
He also received three United States Congressional Records
for spent time in Moscow, Russia working with youth and teachers,
and in 2013, Master Buchholz was inducted into the U.S.A.
Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
was in 1998 that Master Buchholz returned to Wisconsin and
shortly after began One Tree Martial Arts. Since that time
One Tree Martial Arts (OTMA) has grown to become a major learning
center for the martial arts with programs in the Korean, Japanese
and Chinese arts.
Buchholz' philosophy of teaching is to exhaust his knowledge
of martial arts to any student who has a desire to learn and
to diligently apply him or herself to their study. Master
Buchholz often quotes, "a teacher can show the student
a door, but the student must walk through it". Master
Buchholz is dedicated to teaching the martial arts based on
a strong foundation of positive character to ensure that the
student will always use his or her skills in a proper way.
Buchholz encourages anyone who has even the slightest interest
in any aspect of the martial arts to inquire about training
at our school. The rewards will always be greater than anticipated.

has worked extensively at developing his knowledge of
the martial arts through principles and applications.

Dondi Hayden started training in the martial arts at
the age of 38. In 2002 she tested for a black belt in
Kickboxing under the instruction of Mike Lind. Dondi's
drive to continue her journey in the Martial Arts drove
her to obtain another Black belt in Hapkido and Taekwondo
under the instruction of Master Buchholz in 2008.
martial arts have given Dondi a lot of confidence in
herself. She says she has felt more empowered and stronger
both physically and mentally and that these benefits
are something she wants to pass on to other women. She
calls it finding there warrior within! Dondi has been
teaching Hapkido and Taekwondo and has started an exciting
Women’s Kickboxing program at One Tree.

Mr. Vokal began his martial arts study at OTMA in 2009
and, from the start, became a very dedicated student.
Over the years, he has earned a reputation within the
school as a powerful and fast martial artist who enjoys
helping other students learn proper form and execution
of techniques. After observing Cole in action, students
are inspired to be like him in their practice. When
not in the dojo, Cole is also a student and enjoys free
running in his time off.
Mr. Leonard began assisting in teaching the children's
classes in 2011. "Master Jacob" as the kids
call him, began training in that class himself at age
five and set the goal of receiving black belt. Five
years later, in 2010, he attained that goal, having
worked half of his young life to do so. It's this dedication
and tenacity he would like to pass on to the younger
students he now works with. This remarkable young man
consistently inspires the young martial artists as they
strive to "be like Master Jacob".
